For New York law enforcement
Accusatory instruments, drafted right the first time.
LEO Document Assistant walks officers and investigators through informations, misdemeanor complaints and felony complaints. It supplies the statute, the elements and the offense level, so the officer can focus on the facts.
Case information stays on the officer's device. It is never sent to us.
What it does today
The right document
Accusatory Information, Misdemeanor Complaint or Felony Complaint, on direct knowledge, information and belief, or both. The document type follows the charge level, and the app asks before accepting one that doesn't fit.
The law, in full
Every chargeable offense in the Penal Law and the Agriculture and Markets Law, plus Vehicle and Traffic Law §§ 511, 600 and 1192. Each subsection is its own option, with a short plain-language summary so officers can tell them apart at a glance.
Offense level worked out
The class is taken from the statute. Attempts are reduced under Penal Law § 110.05. Where the level depends on the facts, such as prior convictions, the officer picks it from a short list.
Mental state, the officer's call
The culpable mental state is pre-filled only when the statute is clear. Otherwise it is left blank and flagged for the officer, who chooses from intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, criminal negligence, or none.
Nothing prints incomplete
Printing is blocked until every required field is filled, in any order. The app lists and outlines each missing item, so nothing reaches the court with a gap. Before printing, the officer confirms they have reviewed the charge, the law text and the facts.
Set up for your agency
Your agency name, county, logo and motto appear on every document. The profile can be exported and shared across your devices. Local laws for your jurisdiction can be added on request.
Built to the elements. Reviewed by the officer.
LEO Document Assistant is a drafting aid. It is built to the elements of each statute so the officer starts from the correct legal language, but the officer remains the complainant and is responsible for the facts sworn to. The District Attorney and the court decide sufficiency, and every document should be reviewed before it is signed.
How it works
- Choose the charge by searching the section number or plain-language summary.
- Confirm the offense level and the mental state the app has pre-filled or flagged.
- Enter the defendant, the incident and the facts in the officer's own words.
- Review the document, confirm the review, and print. The case clears from the device automatically a few minutes later, or when the tab is closed.
Where we are: the app is in a pilot phase as a single file that runs offline in a web browser. A hosted version with sign-in through your agency's Microsoft or Google accounts is in development. The data page marks which features are available now and which are coming.
